'O' Riedel, How Did I Live Without Thou

16 January 2010 5 Comments

Let’s be honest, wine glasses tend not to be the most versatile pieces of glassware in one’s arsenal.  They are good for serving wine… on occasion water… and in one extreme case I served a beer  in one (see below).

Desperate times call for... a wine glass?

But mostly a wine glass is just a one trick pony.  Even still, it took me a while to come around to stemless glassware. I’m very happy I finally did, though.  The beauty of stemless wine glasses is how easily they move from wine, to beer, to cocktails, to juice, to milk – anything!  Except maybe coffee.

For an excellent bottle of wine, there’s no substitute for a hand made, hand blown Riedel Sommelier.  But for nearly everything else, the Riedel ‘O’ has faithfully served us well.  It’s no fuss, dishwasher friendly, it feels great in your hand and looks gorgeous.  We especially like the Cabernet/Merlot style, with a nice bowl and an elegant taper.

And there’s no better time to take the plunge – Sur la Table currently has sets of 4 glasses for $29.99.

Ah you see here, I have to disagree with you. I hate stemless wine glasses – they have no elegance, they get covered in dirty, greasy fingerprints spoiling the colour of the wine and they are really difficult to wash by hand without breaking. They also take up a lot of space in the cupboard. I was given 8 Reidel by my most recent stepmother and I’m giving them away to a friend because I hate them! Rant over.

Maybe it can take some time (and sure, even effort) to adjust. And we definitely agree about the finger prints, so keep those stemless glasses on the shelf when you’re eating bbq ribs!

But we’re very interested in these 8 Reidel glasses you are giving away – maybe others are too. How about you auction them off on Tag? We are still devotee and would totally get the bidding started!

I’m going to give them to a friend who actually likes them – they are already promised so sorry – no auction. They’d be a pain to post anyway.

Blimey… but true, logistics would not have been simple.
